Here are some pictures of our habitat podcast and extension activities that we presented to our kids. They LOVED the podcast. Since we teach 2nd and 3rd grades, and we are both learning the same things in science, we created a podcast that would work for both grade levels. After watching the podcast, the students got to choose one of the habitats that was mentioned and draw a picture of it. Their picture had to include at least one animal that is found in that habitat. Another extension activity was listing Disney movies under habitats. For ex. Finding Nemo takes place in the ocean habitat. The kids LOVED this and it gave them more knowledge since they are already so familiar with Disney movies.

A description of the teaching unit which I designed to incorporate the Project Integrate training I received on podcasting is as follows:

A character study based on Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse

Anticipation Set: teacher-prepared podcast/bookwalk

Activities:
  • (Independent Practice) Over a period of five days, students will read the novel and respond to their reading in dialectic character journals.
  • (Guided Practice) Students will write leveled questions to guide daily discussions of the novel.
  • (Guided Practice) After completing the novel, students will construct a plot diagram on which they will identify the literary elements of the novel.
  • (Guided Practice) Students will identify important words/ideas from the novel as a basis for writing thematic statements.
  • (Independent Practice) Students will use quoted evidence from their character journals to write a one-page character analysis of the protagonist of the novel.
  • (Guided Practice) Students will use their character analyses to create podcasts about the novel.

Music
4th graders created original podcasts at Fowler. Students created this project with original music composed while in my classroom. His classroom teacher (Steve
Ridgway) and I collaborated so that Garrett's podcast could include his original script and video.

I have several other podcasts and Garageband compositions to share, if you would like to see and hear them.
